Special Marriage Act route
A civil marriage before the Marriage Officer, with a 30-day notice and three witnesses. Both partners keep their religion.
Indian Christian Marriage Act route
The 1872 Act applies where one or both parties are Christian. The marriage is solemnised by an authorised minister or a Marriage Registrar under the Act, following notice requirements set out in the Act. Many churches have their own requirements (for example, pre-marriage counselling or permission where one partner is not Christian).
