What is family law?
Family courts were set up under the Family Courts Act, 1984 to deal with matrimonial and family disputes, with an emphasis on conciliation. Matters such as divorce, maintenance, custody and guardianship are heard there.
Domestic violence complaints under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 are generally heard by the Magistrate's court, and criminal complaints by the criminal courts.
