Court Marriage in Delhi — How It Works Locally

In Delhi, a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act is handled by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate acting as Marriage Officer for your area. Here is what is specific to Delhi.

Who is the Marriage Officer in Delhi?

Delhi's Revenue Department administers marriages under the Special Marriage Act and registration of marriages. The SDM of the sub-division where at least one of you has lived for 30 days acts as Marriage Officer. Applications are made online through the Delhi government's services portal and then verified at the SDM office.

Delhi's districts changed in 2026

Delhi's revenue districts were reorganised from 11 to 13 by a Revenue Department notification of 25 December 2025. The new districts are Central, Central North, East, New Delhi, North, North East, North West, Old Delhi, Outer North, South, South East, South West and West; Shahdara is no longer a separate revenue district. SDM (sub-division) boundaries moved with this change, so the Marriage Officer or registering authority for your address may differ from what older websites say. Always confirm your current sub-division on the Delhi Revenue Department website before applying. A further notification of 3 September 2026 aligned registration jurisdiction with these boundaries, with a Sub-Registrar office for each of the 39 sub-divisions.

How the Delhi process runs

  1. Online application. Notice of intended marriage with scanned documents.
  2. Verification. Both parties appear with originals when called.
  3. Notice period. The notice is published and kept open for 30 days for objections.
  4. Appointment. After 30 days and within three months of the notice, you appear with three witnesses.
  5. Certificate. Issued after solemnisation and entry in the Marriage Certificate Book.

If you are already married

If you married with Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist rites, you register that marriage instead. Registration is compulsory in Delhi under the Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014. See marriage registration in Delhi.
