Most rejected or delayed applications have one thing in common: a document problem. This checklist is organised by the questions the authority is really asking.
Who are you?
Identity proof such as Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence, with photographs.
How old are you?
A birth certificate, Class 10 certificate or passport is the usual age proof. Where documents disagree on date of birth, sort that out before applying.
Where do you live?
For the Special Marriage Act, at least one of you must show 30 days' residence in the district. A rent agreement with a utility bill in the same name is commonly used.
Are you free to marry?
Affidavits on marital status. If divorced, the final decree; if widowed, the death certificate of the former spouse.
For registration of an existing marriage: did it happen?
Wedding photographs, invitation card and any certificate from the place of marriage.
Foreign documents
A foreign partner may need a certificate of no impediment or single status, and foreign documents may need apostille or embassy attestation. Start early.
Fixing mismatches
Choose one reference document (usually the passport or Class 10 certificate) and make the others consistent, or explain the difference in an affidavit.
