Registering a marriage already performed in India
If you married in Delhi NCR with religious rites, you can register it where the marriage took place or where one spouse lives, as the state's rules allow. Both spouses usually need to appear in person, with witnesses.
Civil marriage under the Special Marriage Act
For a new civil marriage, at least one party must have lived in the district for 30 days before notice, and there is a 30-day notice period. That means at least 60 days in practice. Plan the visit around this. See NRI marriage procedure.
After registration
- Certified copies of the certificate for the embassy or foreign authority.
- Apostille by the Ministry of External Affairs, after state-level authentication, where the destination country is a Hague Apostille Convention member.
- Spouse name change in passport, if wanted.
Marriages abroad
An Indian citizen marrying abroad can do so under local law, or under the Foreign Marriage Act, 1969 before an Indian diplomatic officer. Registering that marriage later in India is a separate question we can advise on.
